  • 1 large onion Choose a sweet variety like Vidalia or Walla Walla.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper Optional for added heat.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg Beaten.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • as needed Cooking spray For crispiness.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Peel the onion and cut off the top and bottom, keeping the root intact.
  • Make cuts around the onion, approximately 12 to 16 slices, cutting downward and stopping about an inch above the base.
  • Gently separate the petals to create the blooming effect.

Coating

  • Mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt in a large bowl.
  • In another bowl, beat the egg and set aside.
  • Dip the onion into the flour mixture to coat all petals, then dip into the egg mixture.
  • Coat the onion with breadcrumbs, pressing them onto the petals for adherence.

Cooking

  • Place the prepared onion in the air fryer basket and spray with cooking spray.
  • Cook at 400°F (200°C) for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, checking halfway through to flip if necessary.

Serving

  • Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For extra crispiness, double bread the onion. You can also customize flavors by adding your favorite spices to the flour mixture. Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket while cooking.
