Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 large onion A large Sweet Onion or Vidalia onion is recommended.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Panko works great.
  • 2 large eggs

Seasonings

  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can cooking spray For browning.

Optional Dipping Sauces

  • Dipping sauce of your choice (e.g., spicy ranch or tangy dip)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Peel the onion and cut the top off, about half an inch down. Remove the outer layers carefully to keep the onion intact.
  • Make vertical cuts from the top towards the base, being careful not to slice all the way through, creating petals.

Coating

  • Place the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper in a mixing bowl. Mix well to combine.
  • In another bowl, beat the eggs until frothy.
  • In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs.
  • Dip the prepared onion into the flour mixture, ensuring it gets well coated. Gently shake off any excess flour.
  • Next, dip the floured onion into the eggs, letting the excess drip off.
  • Finally, coat the onion with breadcrumbs, pressing them on to adhere well between the petals.

Cooking

  • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • Spray the entire coated onion generously with cooking spray to promote browning.
  • Place the onion in the air fryer basket, cut side up, and air fry for about 15-20 minutes, or until the onion is golden brown and crispy.
  • Carefully remove the onion from the air fryer and let it sit for a minute before serving.

Serving

  • Serve it hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
  • Presentation is key; place the blooming onion in the center of a platter surrounded by small bowls of dipping sauces.

Notes

For maximum crispiness, serve immediately after cooking. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days.
