  • 1 cup brown sugar Packed brown sugar.
  • 2 large eggs Use large eggs for best results.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Pure vanilla extract is preferred.
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour No need to sift.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Ensure it's fresh for best results.
  • 2 teaspoons hot water Used to activate baking soda.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Enhances flavor.
  • 2 cups chocolate chips Semi-sweet chocolate is commonly used.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, incorporating each fully before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, dissolve baking soda in hot water, then add to the batter along with the salt and mix well.
  • Gradually stir in the all-purpose flour until just combined (avoid overmixing).
  • Fold in the chocolate chips (and any nuts if desired).
  • Drop spoonfuls of dough onto ungreased baking sheets, spacing them about two inches apart.

Baking

  • Bake in preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until golden around the edges but still soft in the center.
  • Let the cookies cool on the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Store cooled cookies in an airtight container or resealable bag. Chilling the dough for 30 minutes before baking enhances flavor and texture.
