  • 1 cup Milk (lukewarm)
  • 1/4 cup Water (lukewarm)
  • 2 1/4 tsp Instant Yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 3 3/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 4 tbsp Unsalted Butter (divided)
  • 1 tsp Salt

Filling Ingredients

  • 1/8 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1/8 cup Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 1/3 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 1/4 cup Graham Cracker Crumbs

Meringue Topping Ingredients

  • 2 large Egg Whites (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/8 tsp Cream of Tartar
  • 1/8 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract (divided)

Instructions

Dough Preparation

  • In a bowl, combine the lukewarm milk and water. Sprinkle in the instant yeast and let it activate for about five minutes until frothy.
  • In a separate bowl, mix 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 3 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, and 1 tsp salt. Add the melted butter and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.

Knead the Dough

  • Sprinkle some flour on your countertop and knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Form the dough into a ball, place it in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for approximately one hour or until it doubles in size.

Filling Preparation

  • While the dough rises, prepare the filling by combining cocoa powder, chocolate chips, and graham cracker crumbs in a bowl.
  • Mix in the heavy whipping cream to create a spreadable filling.

Assemble the Rolls

  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/2-inch thick.
  • Spread the filling evenly over the dough. Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into equal portions, about 1 to 1.5 inches wide.

Baking the Rolls

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Arrange the rolls in a greased baking dish, leaving space between each piece for expansion.
  • Cover with a cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

Meringue Topping

  • While the rolls are baking, prepare the meringue topping by beating the egg whites in a clean bowl until foamy.
  • Gradually add 1/2 cup granulated sugar, cream of tartar, and 1/8 tsp salt, beating until stiff peaks form. Fold in 1/2 tsp vanilla extract.

Finalizing Rolls

  • Once baked, remove the rolls from the oven and immediately spread the meringue over the top.
  • Return them to the oven for an additional 5-10 minutes until the meringue turns lightly golden.

Notes

Serve the rolls warm with optional drizzles of chocolate sauce or caramel. You can also sprinkle additional graham cracker crumbs on top for a beautiful presentation. Pairing with vanilla ice cream elevates this dessert.
