Meat

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb sweet Italian sausage

Vegetables

  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Canned Goods

  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 cups beef broth

Spices

  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • to taste salt and pepper

Preparation

  • Begin by heating a large pot over medium heat. Add the ground beef and sweet Italian sausage. Break apart the meat as it cooks until both meats are nicely browned. Drain off any excess fat.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot. Sauté for about five minutes until onions are translucent.
  • Add in the diced tomatoes, kidney beans, and black beans. Pour in the beef broth and combine the ingredients well.
  • Sprinkle in the chili powder, cumin, and salt and pepper to taste. Stir to ensure spices coat the meat and beans evenly.
  • Bring the chili to a gentle boil. Once bubbling, lower the heat and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • After simmering, taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  • Ladle the chili into warm bowls and serve hot, potentially with toppings like cheese and sour cream.

Notes

To elevate your chili, consider using high-quality meats and allow simmering for longer for fuller flavors. Can add vegetables or use a slow cooker for convenience.
