For the Cookies

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup

For the Brown Butter Icing

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp milk

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a large bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth and creamy.
  • Add the egg, maple syrup, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture; mix until well combined.
  • Gradually add the whisked dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Scoop spoonfuls of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Baking

  • Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are lightly golden and centers remain soft.

Icing

  • In a saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat until it turns a deep golden brown.
  • Remove from heat, whisk in powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
  • Once the cookies are cool, drizzle the icing generously over each cookie.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients and avoid overmixing. Cookies can be served with coffee or tea, and make great gifts when wrapped individually.
