For the Batter

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Ensure butter is softened but not melted.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Topping

  • 1 cup chocolate chips Can be replaced with butterscotch or white chocolate chips.
  • 1 cup toffee bits Feel free to increase the quantity for a more decadent treat.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened unsalted butter, packed brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth and creamy.
  • Stir in the all-purpose flour, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined, avoiding over-mixing.
  • Press the batter into the bottom of the prepared baking dish to create an even layer.

Baking

  • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the top is light golden.
  • Remove from oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips and toffee bits evenly over the top.
  • Return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes to melt the chocolate.
  • Use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly across the surface.

Cooling and Slicing

  • Allow the bars to cool completely at room temperature before slicing into squares or rectangles.

Notes

For serving, pair with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Consider adding a sprinkle of sea salt for enhanced flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
